Micellar imprinting is a powerful technique to create template–complementary binding site inside protein-sized water soluble nanoparticles. Usage of a phosphonamidate template and a thiourea functional monomer allowed us to create a substrate-specific active site inside the cross-linked micelles. Post-modification of the active site installed a nucleophilic catalytic group near the ester bond to be cleaved. The catalytic activity of these artificial esterases could be fine-tuned through modification of the microenvironment of the active site.<br/>
