Activated carbon with surface area of 315 m<sup>2</sup> g<sup>-1 </sup>was produced using rice husk. Macropores were obtained when rice husk was first calcined in a nitrogen atmosphere at 300 °C and then activated with hydrochloric acid and zinc chloride obtained from spent alkaline batteries. Using potassium hydroxide or carbon dioxide as activators did not produce activated carbon in the rice husk. Pineapple leaf fiber was also treated under the same conditions but did not produce activated carbon. This methodology provides a way to convert rice husk waste and discarded alkaline batteries into a value-added product
