We have discovered unusual reactivity of aqueous vanadyl sulfate solutions towards a wide variety of metal oxides. For example the reaction of La2O3 with a refluxing solution of excess VOSO4 results in the removal of vanadium from solution that is accompanied by release of some lanthanum into solution. When the reaction reaches completion, a solid with the formula LaV3O8.3H2O can be isolated from the reaction mixture. Using lower molar ratios of vanadyl to lanthanum oxide produces solids with variable compositions. Notably, in an equimolar reaction, one equivalent of lanthanum is released for ever three moles of vanadyl ion indicating that the reaction is not a simple ion exchange process. Similar reactions occur with Y2O3, Fe2O3, and Al2O3 to produce ternary metal oxides but the rates of reaction and product composition varies. To better understand these reactions, the kinetics and extent of reaction of alpha alumina, acid and basic activated aluminums, aluminum hydroxide and boehmite (AlOOH) with vanadyl sulfate were investigated. This new synthetic pathway for ternary vanadium oxides is expected to be useful for the preparation of catalysts, sensors, phosphors, and other materials.
