Combining in situ NMR and reaction calorimetry to study the catalytic reduction of phenol in aqueous media.   Calorimetry provides an approach to obtain both rates and enthalpies simultaneously. We will share the results of our studies using a combination of reaction calorimetry and in situ NMR to measure to rates and thermodynamic parameters describing the catalytic reduction of phenol and phenolate in aqueous media by heterogeneous catalysis.  While the catalytic reduction rate is fast using Ru and Pt supported on carbon, Pd on carbon proceeds at a slower rate showing cyclohexanone as a discreet intermediate.  Not until ca. &gt;95% of the phenol is consumed does the reduction of cyclohexanone occur and it proceeds at a rapid rate.
