Synthesizing Ru nanoparticles with structural features that enhance stability in oxygen evolution reaction catalysis without sacrificing high activity is a major challenge. We show that exposing low index facets on branched M-Ru nanoparticles and controlling the thickness of Ru shells on M-Ru core-shell nanoparticles creates stable reaction kinetics to achieve high activity and the highest stability observed for Ru oxygen evolution reaction nanocatalysts. I will present strategies for synthesizing core-branched and core-shell bimetallic M-Ru nanoparticles with well-defined sizes (&lt;25 nm) and surface faceting. By growing hexagonal close packed Ru directly onto face-centered cubic seed nanoparticles, branches can be grown in a cubic-core hexagonal-branch mechanism or shells with controlled thicknesses for optimal catalytic performance.
