Low-cost and efficient As(V) (arsenate) and As(III) (arsenite) sorbents for point-of-use (POU) system are needed for the area suffered from high level of arsenic in drinking water, especially for some low-income countries without centralized water treatment facilities. In this study, ceramic materials in both granular and disk forms were fabricated and modified by lanthanum (La). Both As(V) and As(III) removal performance were investigated for bench-scale La-coated ceramic granular and disk POU systems. More than 13000 pore volumes of As(V) spiked solutions, as well as 6400 and 3221 pore volumes of As(III) spiked solutions can be efficiently treated to meet the drinking water standard (&lt;10 μg/L), respectively. Batch adsorption experiments were further conducted along with the characterization of La-coated ceramic material before and after As(V) and As(III) adsorption to investigate adsorption processes. Results revealed that the removal of As(V) can be primarily attributed to the formation of insoluble LaAsO<sub>4</sub>, while formation of inner-sphere complexes with La component on ceramic surface contributed to As(III) removal. La-coated ceramic material could be a promising sustainable and efficient arsenic adsorbent used in POU systems.<br/>
