In the recent years, much attention has been paid to performing analyses in more economical ways in terms of time, waste production, and easiness. Fluorescence spectroscopy is one of the new-generation optical methods that address these expectations with high sensitivity. Fluorescent probes are small organic molecules that specifically interact with certain analyte and in turn, a change in intensity or wavelength is observed in the fluorescence spectrum. Inspired by this, we have designed coumarin-derivative flexible fluorescent probes (Figure 1-a). To our best knowledge, use of these easily synthesized coumarin derivatives as fluorescent probes was not reported in the literature. In fluorescence titration experiments, we have gathered promising results which were supported by theoretical calculations by Gaussian G09 package program. To further explain the phenomenon, we synthesized 1,8-octanediol derivative (Figure 1-b) to see the effect of the linker between two coumarin units on the fluorescence intensity change. The ethylene glycol units show superior fluorescence response to Na<sup>+</sup>/K<sup>+</sup> differentiation than the octanediol unit as a linker. The details of these studies will be presented.
