Nitrenium ions are important reactive species in molecular biology and organic chemistry. In this work, the femtosecond transient absorption (fs-TA), nanosecond transient absorption (ns-TA) and nanosecond time-resolved resonance Raman (ns-TR3) experiments were employed to study the photochemical pathways of N-(4,4’-dibromodiphenylamino)-2,4,6-trimethylpyridinium BF4- salt (DN) from initial photoexcitation to the generation of the key reactive intermediate nitrenium ion 2 directly. In pure acetonitrile solution, the generation of the nitrenium ion 2 was observed directly within 4 ps, showing the vibrational properties intensively. The nucleophilic adduct reaction between nitrenium ion 2 and H2O was also investigated in aqueous solution. The observation of unique intermediate 3 indicates the efficient and exclusive reaction pathway between the nitrenium ion 2 and H2O. The results shown in this paper provide us a new benchmark characterization of nitrenium ion 2 which could be used to guide direct time-resolved spectroscopic study of the covalent addition reaction between nitrenium ion and DNA nucleosides in the further studies.
