Working with the NASA consortium and their ballooning team through the University of Minnesota, students designed and built a payload out of GroBio materials and collected atmospheric data at 100,000 feet. As part of the design phase of the activity, students performed various tests on the GroBio material, analyzed their prototype payloads for design and function, and finally sent their payload to near space carrying different pieces of equipment for data collection. This activity highlights an example on the new frontier of sustainable solutions and innovative products and processes; and supports the engineering and design elements from the Next Generation Science Standards. In this session, we explore how GroBio materials can give students the power to design, create, and test sustainable products grown from mycellium and agricultural waste.
