Controlling the magnetic properties through modification of defect-arrangement in oxygen-deficient perovskites has been investigated. The defects, generated due to oxygen-deficiency, can have different types of arrangement in this class of materials. They may have random or ordered distribution in the structure, leading to variation in the crystal structure. We have shown that it is possible to control the arrangement of defects to obtain various types of ordering by design. The modification of the defect-distribution has a significant impact on magnetic properties. We have demonstrated that the ordering of defects is usually associated with long-range magnetic order, while the disorder in defect-arrangement leads to the absence of magnetic order. We have shown this systematic correlation in several series of oxygen-deficient perovskites. In addition, the type of defect-order can vary, leading to variation in magnetic properties. Furthermore, we have explored the dilution of the material composition with non-magnetic ions to determine the threshold for retention of the long-range magnetic order in defect-ordered oxygen-deficient perovskites. Bulk magnetization and neuron diffraction studies have shown the transitions from long-range to short-range magnetic order as a result of disruption in defect-order and the introduction of non-magnetic ions, highlighting the strong structure-property relationship in this class of materials.
