Redox flow batteries (RFBs) are highly promising systems for large scale energy storage applications. Whereas most redox flow cells are based on metallic active species in aqueous media, there has been increasing interest in developing flow batteries based on solutions of redox active organic compounds in organic solvents in order to achieve higher energy density. Nevertheless, issues related to cost and performance (cell voltage, active material concentration and crossover, lifetime) need to be solved before organic RFBs can be commercially viable. This presentation will detail our work to mitigate the issue of crossover by developing a symmetrical RFB based on a verdazyl radical which can be oxidized and reduced, as well as our efforts to increase energy densities, cell voltages and cyclability by taking advantage of molecular design/tunability in developing new anolytes based on a bispyridinylidene scaffold.
