A new format for the general chemistry laboratory has been implemented which focuses on mastery of broad techniques as opposed to experimentation linked to specific lecture topics.  Retention of the skills that are fundamental to success in post-graduate experiences as well as laboratories associated with future courses is the primary goal.  Ten skills are designated as the learning objectives per each semester of the general chemistry 1/2 sequence.  Students are required to prove mastery of each skill as a basis for their grade in the course.  This evaluation process employs a specifications grading approach.  The objectives range from conceptual themes relevant to experimentation to fundamental laboratory techniques to data collection and written reports.  Examples of the types of technical and conceptual skills assessed include demonstrating proficiency at preparing solutions and understanding the relationship between concentration and absorbance.  The written component includes a rigorous evaluation of the laboratory notebook.  An essential feature of this new laboratory format involves providing students with multiple attempts to prove proficiency as well as ample time to practice the skills.   Time spent in the lab encompasses a blending of traditional experiments with designated practice time and skills assessment.  Analysis of the outcomes of this program will be discussed. <br/>
