Biomass feedstock can be converted into many value-added chemicals through catalytic processes. 5-hydroxymenthylfurfural (HMF) belongs to furan family, which is generally synthesized from cellulose and considered as a vital bridge molecule between biofuel chemistry and fine chemicals. The catalytic selective oxidation of HMF to 2, 5-diformylfuran (DFF) via molecule oxygen is an efficient strategy to transform the platform compound to value-added chemicals. A simple and mild method is developed to realize the process with MnO2 catalyst. Meanwhile, the solvents have a significant effect on the product distribution in the aerobic oxidation of HMF. In this work, different manganese oxides are synthesized, and tubular α-MnO2 exhibits better catalytic performance than other catalysts. 93.2% conversion of HMF and 84.3% selectivity of DFF are obtained in isopropyl alcohol solvent at 140 oC for 4 h. Besides, the α-MnO2 catalyst keeps good reusability after recycling five times.
