Hollow mesoporous carbon/silica nanocomposites with various carbon contents were facilely fabricated via "silica-assisted" strategy by using phenolic resols as a polymer precursor, TEOS as an inorganic precursor, and CTAB as a template. Furthermore, the corresponding silver-modified adsorbents were prepared by ultrasonic assisted incipient wetness impregnation. The desulfurization performance of the adsorbents was evaluated by the selective adsorption of dibenzothiophene (DBT) from model fuels at ambient conditions. The typical physic-chemical properties of the adsorbents were characterized by SEM, TEM, N<sub>2</sub> adsorption-desorption, TGA and XRD. The results showed that the higher carbon content, the better the adsorptive desulfurization performance. The mesoporous carbon HMCNs before and after loading silver species showed the highest adsorptive capacity of 9.56 mg/g and 11.24 mg/g, respectively, ascribing to the high carbon content and high specific surface area of HMCNs. However, the Ag/HMCSNs-HC performed highest selectivity for DBT in competition with toluene and it could be attributed to the good dispersion of silver species, and the carbon matrix that could form synergistic effect with the silver active species, thus improving the selectivity of absorbents.
