Freeze tapecasting is a continuous processing technique allowing fabrication of thin (several hundred microns thick or less) components with controlled and unidirectional porosities. A wide variety of materials including ceramic powders and polymers can be treated by this method (see, e.g., freezecasting.net), making it of interest for fabrication of electrodes for lithium ion and all solid-state batteries. The low tortuosity is advantageous for designing electrodes with high rate capability in lithium ion batteries and for fabrication of composite electrodes for solid-state batteries. For the latter, a porous scaffold made of solid ceramic electrolyte is infiltrated with active material and conductive additives by capillary action. The resulting composite can be combined with a thin dense layer of the electrolyte and a lithium anode to make a solid-state battery with cost and energy density advantages over the more commonly used thin film formats. In this presentation, we will detail our work on novel electrode structures made by freeze tapecasting for batteries.
