We introduce catalytic/magnetic nanoparticle (NP)-stabilized graphene oxide nanosheet (GON) catalysts with high catalytic activity, recycle stability, and high dispersion in nonpolar and aqueous media using ligand exchange layer-by-layer (LbL) assembly. The hydrophobic Pd and Fe<sub>3</sub>O<sub>4</sub> NPs were densely but uniformly deposited onto GONs. Additionally, the hydrophobic NP-stabilized GONs exhibited the excellent catalytic activities (&gt;99 % conversion) and high recycling stability (conversion in 10th cycle reaction&gt; 90%) in the Suzuki-Miyaura coupling reaction for the production of biaryl components, showing high dispersion in toluene. On the other hand, additional coating of poly(ethylene imine) (PEI) monolayer onto hydrophobic NP-coated GONs induced high dispersion in polar media (i.e., alcohol or water), which also showed the catalytic activity of 99 % in the oxidation of 3,3’,5,5’-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB) in aqueous media. Given that metal (or metal oxide) NPs can be used as stabilizers as well as catalysts (or magnetic separators), our approach provides a basis for designing high performance catalysts with amphiphilic properties.
