Chlorinated volatile organic compounds (Cl-VOCs) are persistent pollutants and pose an environmental concern due to having numerous adverse health effects. Cl-VOCs were heavily used until the mid-1980s in numerous industrial applications such as pesticides, solvents, chemical intermediates, metal degreasers, and many others. These compounds have been introduced into the environment through leaks, spills, and/or intentional release. The release of Cl-VOCs into the environment has contaminated groundwater and other environmental matrices and they can persist as dense non-aqueous phase liquids. Zero-valent iron (ZVI) has been employed to treated Cl-VOCs and has shown to reductively dechlorinate chlorinated alkenes, such as trichloroethene. However, ZVI has shown to be unsuccessful in dechlorinating chlorinated alkanes. It was hypothesized by incorporating vitamin B<sub>12,</sub> a naturally occurring electron mediator, it could help facilitate the transfer of electrons to the chlorinated alkanes. The following research explored the reductive dechlorination of the chlorinated alkanes 1,2,3-trichloropropane, 1,2-dichloropropane, 1,3-dichloropropane, 1-chloropropane, and 1,2-dichloroethane in neat samples in the presence of ZVI and B<sub>12</sub>. Byproducts of Cl-VOCs were confirmed through gas chromatography mass spectrometry (GC-MS) coupled to a purge and trap and free chloride was determined by ion chromatography (IC) with suppressed conductivity detection.
