Efficient reduction of O2 provides the basis for the selective oxidation of organic chemicals and better performance from fuel cells. But, the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) is typically characterized by significant kinetic barriers that lead to less-than-optimal utilization of O2 in these applications. This presentation will discuss mechanisms of O2 reduction with molecular catalysts that are capable of operating at very low overpotential (&lt; 100 mV). The implications of these results will be considered in the context of chemical synthesis and energy conversion.
