An approach of incorporating initial drug discovery research in biochemistry laboratory (CHM 364L, 1 credit hour course) was described. During a total of 42 hours (three-hour lab session each week for 14 weeks), students were expose to bioinformatics, molecular cloning, protein expression, purification and characterization, as well as enzymatic kinetic assays. The research-orientated lab design not only covered the basic elements in common undergraduate biochemistry lab manuals, but also emphasized the logical connection among biochemical lab techniques. Nevertheless, the approach exposed students to the real research world and shed light on the big picture of drug discovery.<br/>
