Hexacoordinate silicon complexes have recently been demonstrated as a successful alternative to tris(8-hydroxyquinolinato)aluminum (Alq3), which is traditionally used as the electron transport and electroluminescent layers in organic electronic devices such as organic light emitting diodes (OLEDs) and phosphorescent light emitting diodes (PHOLEDs). An advantage of using hexacoordinate silicon complexes with dianionic pincer ligands is their ability to be synthetically modified to allow for tunable optoelectronic properties. In this study, new hexacoordinate silicon complexes were synthesized and characterized utilizing the 2,6-bis(2’-indolyl)pyridine (BIP) family of pincer ligands; which provide enhanced stability. The optical and electronic properties studied in solution correspond with predicted values. Calculations were performed using density functional theory (DFT) and are being tested against experimental results to develop a more robust computational model to predict the optoelectronic properties of the Si(pincer)<sub>2</sub>systems. Solid state properties of the complexes are currently being tested in addition to device performance.
