The mission of Park University is transform lives through accessible, student-centered, quality higher education. As such, the university is an open-enrollment institution in which a high school diploma or equivalency is the only requirement for admission. The university does offer highly competitive academic scholarships and recruit heavily for well-prepared students across the U.S. With a large bimodal distribution in student backgrounds, it behooves the instructor to investigate methods to level the playing field for those with weaker math and science experiences, while still challenging students with stronger skill sets. To address this need, an adaptive learning courseware, Knewton alta, has been utilized in a GOB chemistry course. Knewton alta provides extensive remediation for both chemical concepts and mathematical insufficiencies through just in time instruction as needed on a personalized basis. With review of elementary mathematical and scientific concepts addressed by the platform (in real time), the instructor is freed to provide greater depth and breadth of concepts within the classroom. Despite its promise, very little research has been reported on the success or failure of adaptive learning tools on student performance. The effectiveness of this tool on overall student performance was measured by pre- and post-course evaluation using the ACS GOB exam, course exam performance, and attitudes toward chemistry were assessed utilizing surveys. Results to date will be presented.<br/>
