Shale gas revitalized the U.S. chemical industry. The dark years when it looked like ethane was gone are now distant memories. R&D organizations responded during the dark years, moving efforts from gas-based processes to alternatives like coal, biomass and waste. The gas-rich future we see before us is again shaping R&D activities. Product and process research are shaped by a future with abundant NGL resources. Innovations continue to deliver significant growth opportunities in plastics, pushing performance to new levels through innovative process, product, and application developments. Sustainability in both a new threat, and an opportunity to differentiate and lead in the market and address significant global challenges. The implications of these dynamics within the chemical industry on Dow's technology strategy and innovation focus will be discussed.
