Metal organic frameworks (MOFs) have been on the forefront of research involving gas sorption, separation, and catalysis due to the versatility in structures and compositions of their pore space. Our previous research has shown that through complex synthetic design, the properties of the pore can be controlled. For example, selective partitioning was utilized to improve the efficiency of the pore space, which resulted in enhanced carbon dioxide adsorption. Additionally, newest research also demonstrated the capability of specific metal-organic frameworks to perform molecular separation through a molecular sieving mechanism. We have designed a novel MOF crystal in which the molecular sieving effect is a derivative of selective partitioning of the pore apertures.
