Trimethylamine (TMA) is a byproduct of animal husbandry operations. In the presence of oxidants, amines contribute to the formation of secondary organic aerosols, such as trimethylammonium and ammonium salts. These secondary aerosols affect health and climate in various ways. To identify the water-soluble component of the particles formed from trimethylamine, the amine was exposed to hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), ozone (O3), and nitrogen dioxide (NO2) under blacklights in an aerosol chamber with dimethyl sulfide (DMS) and analyzed using a Particle-Into-Liquid Sampler (PILS) paired with ion chromatography (IC) instruments. From the experiments, it was determined that trimethylamine reacted with oxidants to form a variety of reaction products.
