A cell culturing experiment involving <i>E. coli</i> and various monosaccharides using phosphate buffers revealed that monosaccharides combine with inorganic phosphates to provide the corresponding monosaccharide phosphoranes. The mechanism involves the formation of the dioxaphosphetanes which acts as an activated phosphate for the esterification. The phosphoranes are very labile but have been shown to convert to the corresponding phosphates via pH adjustments without the use of any enzymes.
