Homogeneous transition metal-catalyzed carbon-carbon and carbon-heteroatom bond forming reactions are among the paramount organic synthetic methods for products of high value. One such prominent synthetic strategy is “borrowing hydrogen” which has recently attracted enormous interests in academia and fine-chemical industries. This approach offers great advantages over conventional methods, as a) no hydrogen acceptor or oxidant is required; b) less waste is generated with water and hydrogen as the only possible byproducts; c) high atom efficiency can be achieved; and d) challenging reactants such as alcohols can be directly used. Alcohols are readily available and can be obtained from biomass feedstocks. In addition, with the increasing concerns on environmental and economic problems, base metal catalysts are becoming more desirable. In this talk we will describe our recently developed cobalt catalyst supported by a novel tripodal mixed P/N donor ligand which is designed to offer extraordinary stability to metal center and may directly participate in bond activations by metal-ligand cooperativity (MLC). Our cobalt catalyst has shown remarkable reactivities in (1) dehydrogenation of secondary alcohols to ketones; (2) dehydrogenative homo-coupling of primary alcohols to esters; and (3) dehydrogenative coupling of primary alcohols and amines to imines/amines. Strategies for selective synthesis via "borrowing hydrogen" will be discussed.<br/>
