Valorization of CO2 (e.g. from biogas) via hydrogenation with renewable hydrogen into methane is a promising avenue to storage renewable energy in the form of methane and reducing greenhouse gas emissions. Coupling of heterogeneous catalysts with non-thermal plasma (NTP) has been recently considered a plausible method for a wide range of reactions. In this group, NTP assisted deNOx and water-gas shift processes have been demonstrated under ambient temperature conditions without coke formation. Herein we study the NTP assisted catalytic CO2 methanation using zeolite (e.g. Na-BETA) supported Ni catalysts. Additionally, in situ diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy (DRIFTS) developed in our group was specifically employed to probe the catalysts surface during the NTP activated catalytic reactions aiming at understanding the NTP promoted surface reactions. Experimental results confirm that the combination of zeolite catalysts with NTP shows a great potential for enhancing both the CO2 conversion and CH4 selectivity in comparison with the NTP gas phase reaction (empty reactor). The results also confirm the stability of the developed catalysts during 15 h time-one-stream under NTP. In addition, variation of surface species was measured as a function of the applied peak voltage during the CO2 methanation under NTP conditions.
