As the search for green corrosion inhibitors for industrials metals intensifies, research focus is on polymers, particularly the natural polymers. Polymers are attractive due to their availability, cost effectiveness, compatibility with natural environment, inherent stability, and presence of multiple adsorption centers. However, their anticorrosive ability is challenged by their poor solubility property in aqueous medium and instability at elevated temperatures. Incorporation of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) into polymer matrices has been found to enhance thermal stability property greatly. Chitosan/AgNPs, Gum Arabic/AgNPs, carboxymethyl cellulose/AgNPs, and Dextran/AgNPs composites have been successfully synthesized and tested as anticorrosive agent for low carbon steel in strong acid environments at different temperatures. They have been found to be effective in retarding steel corrosion. The corrosion protection performance of the natural polymer-AgNPs composites is found to be dependent on temperature, concentration and polymer molecular weight. The mechanism of corrosion protection by the polymer/AgNPs composites has been elucidated using advanced instruments including the X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS). Natural polymer/AgNPs composites are promising green anticorrosive agent for industrial processes like acid pickling, oil wells acidizing, descaling, <i>etc</i>.
