Tricyanofuran-type metastable-state photoacids (TCF mPAHs) are novel photochromic molecular switches that promise new ways of approaching bio-imaging, drug delivery, polymer functionalization, and ion detection systems. In contrast to traditional spiro compounds, the most-often employed molecular switches, TCF mPAHs use visible light for photoisomerization and circumvent the need for prior acidification when pH modulation is intended. This research project employs two-dimensional NMR techniques and computational chemistry tools to establish the isomeric identity of a particular TCF mPAH in its Open form. In doing so, this project opens the door for full-fledged mechanistic studies on the photoisomerization pathway for TCF mPAHs. The long-term objective of this avenue is to improve our predictive power when designing new TCF mPAHs for use in application.
