Biomass-derived chemicals are attractive starting materials for the substitution of fossil resources. Since oxygen content of biomass-derived materials is high compared with most value-added chemicals, which have been produced mainly by petrochemical industries, the decrease of oxygen content is an important step in the conversion of biomass to value-added chemicals. One of the promising methods is deoxydehydration (DODH), which converts vicinal OH groups to one C=C double bond. Recently, we found that ReOx/CeO2 modified with Pd and Au metal particles (ReOx–M/CeO2 (M=Pd and Au)) was effective to DODH reactions using H2 reductant as hetergeneous catalysts. These catalysts are applicable to the conversion of 1,4-anhydroerythritol to tetrahydrofuran, erythritol to butanediols, glycerol to allyl alcohol, and erythritol to 1,3-butadiene and so on. Recently, it has been reported that ReOx–Pd/CeO2 was effective to the reaction of various methyl glycosides with cis-vicinal OH groups, and it is also demonstrated that obtained dideoxy products are converted to value-added chemicals such as chiral triols and so on.
