Cartap was one of the most used pesticides. The presence and removal of this pesticide in water become a great concern due to its toxicity and undesirable effect. In this study, the removal of cartap by Fenton oxidation in a fluidized-bed reactor was discussed. The effect of the parameters namely the initial pH, H2O2 and Fe2+ concentration in the first- and second-stage decomposition were evaluated as well as fitting the over-all reaction using a mathematical model. Furthermore, the applicability of artificial neural network (ANN) for the optimization and identification of most significant parameters were also studied. Results show that fluidized-bed Fenton process effectively removes cartap up to 95.9% given the optimized process variables namely 40.4 mM H2O2, 2.9 mM Fe2+ and 3.0 pH with 5 mM cartap after 2 hours of reaction. The increase of H2O2 concentration accelerates cartap removal during first- and second-stage decomposition at a certain level of concentration and the rise of Fe2+ concentration leads to the improvement of cartap removal during the first-stage decomposition but it slows down during second-stage decomposition. It was also found out that both low and high pH influence cartap removal in both stages of decomposition. Furthermore, the order of relative importance is as follows: H2O2 concentration &gt; Fe2+ concentration &gt; initial pH.
