The transformation of carboxylic acids in H2 to aldehydes and alcohols is important in the production of biomass-derived chemicals and fuels. Palladium-promoted ReOx clusters supported on silica were explored as catalysts for the sequential reduction of propionic acid to propanal and propanol. Steady state and transient kinetics were used to establish catalytic performance. Results from electron microscopy, in-situ X-ray absorption spectroscopy and in-situ IR spectroscopy were combined with those from reaction studies to elucidate mechanistic information and structure-activity relationships. Palladium metal particles facilitated partial reduction of the ReOx clusters via hydrogen spillover and catalyzed the rapid hydrogenation of intermediate aldehyde formed on ReOx to product alcohol.
