Metal atoms in well-defined chemical environments on solid surfaces expose unique active sites that mimic those of classic molecular homogeneous catalysts. Two single site catalytic systems will be explored in this presentation. In the first example, isolated cations of Co present in the defects of nitrogen-doped carbon are prepared by controlled pyrolysis of appropriate carbon, nitrogen and metal precursors. The resulting single site Co materials effectively catalyze the oxidative dehydrogenation of alcohol, with a turnover rate approaching that of highly active Pt metal nanoparticles. In a second example, well-defined Cu-oxo species synthesized in the cages of mordenite zeolite are studied for the cyclic and steady-state selective oxidation of methane to methanol. In both examples, results from extensive materials characterization and detailed kinetic studies are used to elucidate structure-activity relationships.
