Imaging temperature via nuclear magnetic resonance would provide magnetic resonance imaging with a new, useful toolkit to monitor physiology. In this talk, we will discuss the ability of 59Co nuclei (which have a 20,000 ppm wide chemical shift window) to provide that capability. The potential of this nuclei in this application was recognized nearly half a century ago. However, the development of these species stalled, which we attribute to a lack in fundamental knowledge on how the specific environment of the 59Co nucleus impacts its ability to detect temperature. We will present our first results in studying 59Co NMR thermometry and how to control it via tuning the ligand shell. Our fundamental coordination chemistry approach already highlights potential future design principles related to (1) ligand encapsulation, (2) ligand field splitting, and (3) rotational correlation time. These points will be elaborated in further detail in this presentation.
