Octopus minor is a member of octopus species and has been called as small octopus, long arm octopus, baby octopus or long-legged octopus. Octopus minor has been used as food materials in many countries. However, due to their soft tissue structure and high price, artificially weighted gaining with water or a phosphate solution is frequently performed to get improper economic benefits. A new non-destructive method using an optical 3D scanners has been developed in this study to differentiate artificially weighted O. minor (AWO) with authentic O. minor. The principle of this method is based on the density difference between AWO and authentic samples. AWO should have lower density than authentic ones. Weight changes of O. minor depending on the soaking time were determined. More than 2000 O. minor were soaked in tap water for 1 or 3 h and used for block shaped sample containing 4 to 7 O. minor species per each block. The sample block were prepared with 20% water glazing to protect the quality of O. minor from moisture evaporation. The calculated density determined by 3D scanner from authentic O. minor ranged from 0.900 to 0.997, whereas 3 h soaked sample had 0.894 to 0.969 g/cm3. 3D scanner method had difficulty to differentiate 1 h soaked O. minor whereas had high potential to discriminate 3 h soaked samples with high possibility. The total time of 3D scanning takes less than 30 min for one block sample with a relatively high precision. Therefore, 3D scanning method could be used as an on-site screen tool for AWO from authentic O. minor.
