Over the past few decades, there has been an ever increasing global demand for the development of sustainable technologies which can give similar or improved performances with minimal impact on the environment. Catalysis plays a major role in many industrial processes leading to atom efficiency, step simplification, high selectivity and reduction in the pollutant waste. Metal Organic Frameworks (MOFs) have emerged as a class of promising materials for catalytic applications due to their crystallinity, structural diversity, high porosity, ease of functionalization and presence of a high density of active sites. MOFs as heterogeneous catalysts have shown remarkable efficiencies in some of the relevant catalytic processes for organic transformations. Hereby, a novel In(III) based metal organic framework (MOF) was assembled from the trigonal prismatic [In3(µ3-O)(H2O)3(O2C-)6] secondary building unit (SBU) and tetratopic linker H4pbpta (pbpta = 4,4,4,4-(1,4-Phenylenbis(pyridine-4,2-6- triyl))-tetrabenzoic acid)) to give rise to the resulting In-pbpta with soc-topology. The MOFs with the robust soc-topology are scarce and the obtained MOF shows a Brunauer, Emmett and Teller (BET) surface area of 1341 m2/g with a pore volume of 0.64 cm3/g which is the highest among the reported In-soc-MOFs. The constructed MOF acts as a heterogeneous Lewis acid catalyst for highly efficient conversion in one-pot multicomponent Strecker reaction of ketones in solvent-free conditions. The resulting a-aminonitriles are obtained in high yields in less than 30 minutes. They can be further hydrolyzed to give the unnatural a-amino acids. Moreover, the heterogeneous catalyst is easy to separate and shows negligible loss of activity for over four cycles.
