Reliable routes to synthesize divalent lanthanide-containing materials are of interest for materials and technological applications as well as for a better understanding of the bonding exhibited by these metals. We have recently undertaken a study to develop new routes in preparing divalent europium containing materials. This study has resulted in a new family of lanthanide squarates: Ln2(C4O4)3(H2O)2 (Ln = La – Nd, Sm) and Eu4(C4O4)5(H2O)12Cl2 5 H2O. Additionally, the Pearson Hard-Soft nature of the ligand is under investigation to determine if softening the oxo-donors may more provide for a better stabilization of the softer divalent cation. The properties and chemical manipulations of the oxo-donors will be discussed along with structural and synthetic details of both compounds.
