Chlorantraniliprole (CAP), an anthranilic diamide insecticide, was registered for agricultural use in 2008 and granted supplemental registration for application to California rice fields from September 2016 through December 2018. Its use in California as an alternative to pyrethroid and neonicotinoid insecticides rapidly increased as a result of its efficacy and specificity relative to its predecessors. However, CAP is highly toxic to aquatic invertebrate species and was widely detected in surface water samples collected along the central coast region of California. Investigation of the partitioning of CAP under simulated California rice-growing conditions concluded that sorption was moderately weak, reversible and enhanced by increased salinity; resulting in an estimated 77 – 88% of the applied mass to remain in the soil and 11 – 22% to potentially enter nearby waterways, such as the Sacramento River, with tail water drainage. In this work microcosms were constructed to investigate the degradation of CAP in two California rice field soils under aerobic and anaerobic conditions at varying salinities representative of summer growing conditions. Results show that CAP will degrade in both aerobic and anaerobic soils and indicate that a combination of biotic and abiotic processes possibly influenced by dissolved ions may be responsible for the dissipation of CAP from soils.
