Cellulose is one of the outstanding nature’s materials, which has an extreme broad application potential ranging from timber to polymeric medical products. Cellulose is prone to facile chemical modification due to available hydroxyl groups, and it has good thermal, electrical, and chemical resistance properties. Therefore, it is an ideal substrate for many novel functional applications.<br/>Cellulose spinning into filaments is an easy processing technology to increase the value of cellulose materials. These filaments have been widely used in commercial textile and composite applications, and wide range of alternative applications has already been presented in the literature. When combining installed functionalities and smart processing routes, this open up novel applications for cellulose filaments beside traditional ones. At this moment, the research area of cellulose filaments is revolutionized by the development of new kind of polymeric (regenerated), cellulose nanofibril (CNF), fibre, and wood particle type filaments. All of these novel type filaments have their own inherent advantages and disadvantages, and what unites these filaments is their similar chemical modifiability potential.<br/>In this presentation, and overview with case studies of the novel applications for cellulose filaments will be discussed. Case examples from the novel applications including: capturing pharmaceuticals from water, filaments for immunodiagnostic applications, filaments for wound healing materials, and filaments for optical fibers, will be presented. These alternative applications broaden the application potential of wood based filaments.
