1,2-naphthoquinones are an important structure type in medicinal chemistry, materials and natural products. However, there are few characterized structures of 1,2-naphthoquinones in the literature. In this project, we report the synthesis and characterization of a series of 1,2-naphthoquinones, which are a perfect target for undergraduate research because of their coloration, crystallinity and spectroscopic properties. Moreover, the research combines state-of-the-art techniques in synthesis, spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction. The formation of a series of compounds allows the student to investigate relations between structures and spectroscopy. We show the importance of student participation in undergraduate research and the value of shared instrumentation for the chemistry program at the Universidad de Costa Rica.
