Hydrogels are polymeric materials containing very high proportion of water exceeding 90% while maintaining a three-dimensional structure and as such they possess promising properties in tissue engineering, drug delivery, cosmetics and others. Cellulose and hemicellulose are abundant renewable biopolymers on earth and their association to elaborate biobased hydrogel can take advantage of their low toxicity, biocompatibility and also of the high mechanical properties of CNC to afford hydrogels with efficient and controlled properties. Herein, we report the fabrication of entirely biobased hydrogels composed of wheat Arabynoxylan (AX) and Cellulose Nanocrystals (CNC) with tunable and triggerable mechanical properties. Bio-gel formation of Arabynoxylane (AX) on CNC is due to the interaction between of Arabinoxylan (AX) on Cellulose NanoCrystals (CNC) as evidenced by Quartz crystal microbalance with dissipation (QCM-D) measurements. Mechanical properties of the CNC-AX hydrogel were studied by measuring the elastic and viscous modulus (G’ and G’’ respectively) under different conditions mimicking physiological media as salinity and temperature. Gel reformation after submission to high shear rates was also demonstrated using rheological experiments. Kinetic of formation CNC/AX was investigated to open the road to potential application as bio-injectable gels.
