Novel separation media hold the key to energy-efficient separations because of their unique abilities to recognize and discriminate between molecules through controlled sizes and interactions. They are the building blocks of future chemical separations in ion recognition, gas storage and purification, environmental remediation, and many clean-up activities at DOE sites. Replacing energy-intensive separation methods by energy-efficient processes, such as membrane separation or adsorption, is therefore an essential step toward substantial future energy savings. This presentation will provide an overview of my research in the following four areas related to development of novel separation media: (1) ionic liquids, (2) mesoporous materials, (3) fiber adsorbents, and (4) emerging porous liquids. The overall goal of my research is to investigate fundamental principles underpinning separation media that selectively bind or transport target molecular and ionic species through tailored interactions.
