Our new rare cell profiling technology, magnetic ranking cytometry, uses the magnetic loading of individual cells to report on biomarker expression at the single-cell level. This approach can be used to profile circulating tumor cells in blood and provides a high-information content molecular profile in a single measurement. We have expanded the capabilities of the platform so that it now profiles both protein (Nature Nanotechnology, 2017) and nucleic acid (Nature Chemistry, 2018) analytes at the single cell level. On-chip evaluation of clinically-relevant protein and mRNA markers (such as EpCAM, AR, ARV7) has been performed in patient samples, allowing molecular marker profiles related to therapuetic response to be measured at the single cell level. This type of measurement has the potential to enable the collection of a "Liquid Biopsy", where genotypic and phenotypic information about a tumor can be elucidated using a noninvasive blood sample.
