Electrical energy storage devices that utilize metallic anodes require reversible plating and stripping of a metal over many cycles.  At very high rates of charge and discharge, the deposition can surpass the maximum diffusion rate of ions to the electrode.  In this regime overlimiting conductance is thought to arise from a hydrodynamic instability dubbed Electroosmotic Flow of the second kind.  These electroconvective flows result in a propagation of rough deposits and hinder the performance of electrochemical devices. Viscoelastic electrolytes have been developed composed of solutions of high molecular weight polymers in typical commercial electrolytes.  These electrolytes have been shown to suppress electroconvection and mitigate the resulting overlimiting current.  However, the interaction between the polymers and electrodes is still not fully understood.  There is an extensive amount of literature on the use of different electrolyte additives for lithium metal anodes that result in different interfacial chemistries.   This talk will focus on the utilization of these additives to influence the electrode surface.  The talk will discuss how surface modifications produced by adsorbing polymer influence ion transport and electroconvection in the extended space charge region near an adsorbed polymer/electrode interface.  <br/>
