β-1,4 xylan crystallizes into a hydrate crystal with three-fold chain conformation in an aqueous environment. We crystallized of homoxylan from DMSO solution to obtain a crystalline complex of xylan and DMSO. The complex showed 2 peaks with equivalent intensity for each carbon in solid-state NMR. The chemical shift of C4 was 106 ppm indicating that the xylan in this allomorph probably has a two-fold helix conformation. The complexed DMSO molecules could be exchanged with many aprotic solvents such as ethanol or acetone as was confirmed by infrared spectroscopy, without changing much the X-ray diffraction profile. The conformation did not change by solvent exchange.<br/>
