Lanthanide based luminescent materials have many applications in medical equipments, forensics, and anti-counterfeit fields. However, their luminescence are weak because the transition is parity forbidden. To increase luminescence, a ligand acts as an antenna to absorb light and transfer the energy to the lanthanide(III) ion through the antenna effect. In our group, we aim to explore a novel pincer ligand’s ability as an “antenna” to europium(III) and gadolinium(III) ions. However, due to their paramagnetic nature, NMR solution studies are difficult to employ. Thus, we use lanthanum(III) ions to model the solution behavior of our novel pincer ligand. Herein we will report our NMR solution studies coupled with our results from FTIR spectroscopy and mass spectrometry. We will also report coordination reactions with Eu(III) and Gd(III) ions.
