Various question formats are commonly used in organic chemistry to assess student comprehension. Standardized exams typically use multiple choice questions. Other question formats include matching, fill in the blank, and free response. The authors report results taken from a detailed comparison of question formats and student results gleaned from over one hundred and fifty question comparisons. The impact of format on student responses and the value of response analyses in improving assessment and instruction are examined and discussed.
