Electrochemical reactions and processes offer a wide and flexible set of tools that enable innovative water treatment and sensing applications. These applications depend on the development of appropriate materials, a deep understanding of the various electron-transport processes, and an acknowledgement of the limitations associated with these processes. In this talk, we will discuss our recent work in applying nanomaterials as the enabling materials for different water treatment and sensing applications. Specifically, we will discuss how carbon nanotubes can be used to form electro-active membrane materials for separation, how graphene-based materials can be used as highly sensitive sensor platforms for the detection of heavy metals detection in complex streams, and how carbon nanotube surface groups can facilitate electron transfer between contaminants sorbed onto electrodes and facilitate difficult transformation reactions. We will discuss the material fabrication steps, material characterization, and electrochemical processes. In addition, we will discuss the challenges and unresolved problems associated with these technologies.
