Single-headed amphiphiles have long been used for their ability to kill bacteria through the disruption of bacterial membranes. Quaternary ammonium compounds (QACs) are a class of amphiphiles with prominent antimicrobial characteristics which, despite large usage since the mid-20th century, remain largely underdeveloped. Through their continued use, resistance to QACs bearing only one positively charged nitrogen head (monoQACs) are lowering the efficacy of common active ingredients like benzalkonium chloride (BAC) and cetyl pyridinium chloride (CPC). To combat this, a new series of QACs bearing multiple positively charged nitrogens (multiQACs), including some with a nonpolar chain between polar heads (bolaQACs) is being constructed. Towards this effort, metallocene structures were chosen as scaffolds for alkylation.
