Thermal separation technologies currently employed in industry, such as distillation and evaporation, have a significant energy cost. One lower energy alternative is polymer membranes capable of liquid separations, however the associated materials are vastly understudied. Polymers of Intrinsic Microporosity (PIMs) have shown promise for such applications, but the commonly employed polymerization strategies limit the structural modifications possible and thus the associated polymer separation properties. This works aims to explore post-polymerization modifications in parallel with new modular synthetic approaches for the synthesis of PIMs that allow for the exploration of the effect of polymer structure on separation function. Through this approach, a library of PIMs have been synthesized and characterized with many materials demonstrating good separation properties.
